MIPS

What are the key MIPS changes for 2023?

One of the main changes for MIPS reporting in 2023 is the option for clinicians to use MIPS Value Pathways (MVPs) to fulfill their reporting requirements. MVPs are designed to align and integrate measures and activities across the Quality, Cost, and Clinical Improvement categories of MIPS for different specialties or conditions. While MVPs will eventually replace the traditional MIPS program, participation in 2023 through 2027 is voluntary.

CMS has also introduced four new Improvement Activities for clinicians to use in their 2023 reporting, and has added an improvement score bonus in the Cost category based on measure-specific score improvements. The bonus can account for up to 1% of the category score.

In addition, CMS will no longer provide bonus MIPS incentives for exceptional performance, as the additional performance threshold has been eliminated. For the 2023 performance year, the performance threshold will be 75 points.
